California Income Tax Overview (2025)

California has one of the highest state income tax rates in the United States, with a top marginal rate of 13.3% for income over $1 million. For most working Californians earning between $60,000 and $150,000, the effective state income tax rate falls in the 8–10% range after the standard deduction is applied.

California uses a progressive tax system with 10 income brackets. There is no California standard deduction equivalent to the federal one — instead, California offers a basic personal exemption credit of $144 (single) or $288 (married) that reduces your tax owed directly.

California vs. No-Tax States

Compared to states with no income tax like Texas or Florida, a California resident earning $100,000 pays roughly $9,300 more per year in state income taxes. Over a 30-year career, the difference can exceed $300,000 — a significant factor in the large migration of workers from California to Texas, Nevada, and Arizona in recent years.

However, California's no sales tax on groceries, strong employee protections, and high prevailing wages in tech and entertainment partially offset the income tax burden for many residents.

California SDI — State Disability Insurance

California also deducts State Disability Insurance (SDI) from most employee paychecks. Starting in 2024, the SDI rate is 1.1% with no wage ceiling — meaning all wages are subject to SDI. This is not included in most basic calculators but adds roughly $825/year for a $75,000 earner. Use the calculator above and note the disclaimer — for full accuracy, add ~1.1% of gross wages to your state deductions.
